Mrs. Jacobson encircled her hand around my wrist as I walked toward the kitchen. “Can we talk?”

“Okay. Sure.”

We strolled into their family room. Sitting on the couch, we faced one another.

“So how are things?” she asked.

“Great.” I nodded, feeling my pulse increase as I folded my shaky hands.

“You don’t have to be nervous. I just wanted to talk to you and to see if I could make any suggestions.”

“Well, everything is going great. Mateo’s one of the nicest people I’ve ever met.”

“Yes.” Her eyes became distant as she nodded. “Mateo’s an extremely passionate man. It may be hard to keep him focused because he’s used to being disappointed. He’s gonna fight you. You’re gonna have to fight when he wants you to give up.”

I nodded, acknowledging what she was saying.

“He doesn’t believe he deserves a good woman.”

My eyes began to mist. It was unfortunate that such a wonderful man didn’t believe that he deserved happiness. My heart panged for him.

“He may even sabotage the relationship in some way. He puts up a good front but he’s extremely kind. He’s even sensitive when he has that special person in his life.” I wiped away the tears that had escaped my eyes. She placed her hand on mine.

“I’m not trying to make you cry. It’s just that I’ve heard a lot about you. I know he loves you. You seem like a great match. He needs someone strong and smart like you. He tells me how you care for your students. That’s what he needs, someone who’s going to care for him--fight for him. I believe you will.” She patted my hand.

“I will.” I nodded, stifling a sob.

“I know.” She erased the distance between us, pulling me into an embrace.

“If you need any help with anything, let me know.”

“Okay. Thank you.” My voice trembled.
